Simply put Internet Marketing is using the power of the internet to market and sell a product or service. The subset of Internet Marketing covered in this post is “Direct Marketing:
Sounds interesting to a Baby Boomer but how does it work? What do you do to get started? Well that really is a good question. The best answer is to start by learning a “new language” and a new method of reaching prospects.
I am going to start out by introducing you to three terms that are commonly heard in the world of “Direct Marketing” on the internet :
Squeeze Page: The squeeze page is the first thing that comes up on the screen when you reach a Direct Marketing website. It introduces you to the person, product or company that is promoting a product, service or opportunity. It has a section on it that you fill in your name and email address if you would like to learn more. The section is known as the “Opt In block.” The squeeze page is also known as the Capture Page.”
Opt In: The “Opt In” box is used to collect the name and email addresses of potential buyers of the product, service or business opportunity that is being offered. This list of names and email addresses is at the heart of the Direct Marketing business model. The prospect Opts in to learn more usually with an offer of free training or informational videos. In exchange for the free offer, the prospect gives you their email address. That email address is then added to your list. You will hear again and again your list is your most important asset in this business. We will cover the whys in a coming post.
Sales Letter: The Sales Letter will appear directly after the viewer has “opted in.” The Sales Letter goes into greater detail about what is being offered. In most cases it has a “Buy Now” button that allows the viewer to purchase the product or service being offered right then and there.
Autoresponder: This interesting term refers to a system of sending a series to emails to the viewers of the Direct Marketing offers. It is an ingenious and automated system of keeping in touch with persons who have viewed the companies website and “opted in.” The email letters are prepared in advance and sent out on a schedule that is preset. Flawless in its execution and extremely effective. This is a system that will keep working for you once it is set up.
These are some of the first terms you hear when entering the world of internet marketing. We are preparing a list of additional terms and will post those soon. In sum, “Direct Marketing” has many of the methods included in the “traditional” marketing world but with many new methods that are proving to be more effective on the internet than the “traditional” offline marketing approaches. The successful Direct Marketing online is truly targeted and reaches your market.
It is direct to the exact person to whom the seller wants to attract. It is very targeted and extremely cost effective when done correctly.
We will follow up this post with more of the education of the future “Direct Marketer.” If you would prefer not to wait for the next post, I can be contacted at 704-975-2047.
